The Westway, our beloved community centre in Caterham on the Hill, does a cracking job of providing for our different resident groups. I held one of my first ever surgeries there and saw older ladies getting their hair done, next to mum and baby sessions and the Men in Sheds community workshop. Since then, I’ve seen their work delivering vaccines during the pandemic, hosting bereavement, mental health and refugee support groups and putting on English and IT lessons. They are absolute local superheroes.
But, as some of you will know, they need funds to survive. The non-domestic energy package announced by Government will help somewhat, and I used them as a specific example of the vital community support we might lose without further help when discussing it with ministers. I'm very glad charities and community groups have been included. We’ve also been working with Tandridge District Council, Surrey County Council and our local NHS to see where they can do more.
