The Government has announced £125 million in funding for councils to provide support for victims of domestic abuse and their children, including £1.9 million for Surrey County Council. This will help to ensure victims and their children are able to access life-saving support such as therapy, advocacy and counselling in safe accommodation, including refuges – a key part of the Government’s landmark Domestic Abuse Bill.
Today’s announcement is also part of a wider package of support for victims of rape and domestic abuse, with an unprecedented £76 million pledged last May to ensure vital services including refuges, helplines and counselling remained accessible throughout the pandemic. And just last week, the Government announced another £40 million for victim support services.
The Ask for Ani scheme was also launched by the Home Secretary in January, which allows those at risk or suffering from abuse to discreetly signal that they need help. By asking for Ani, a trained pharmacy worker will offer a private, safe space where they can help with access to support services, such as national or local domestic abuse helplines, or support from the police if necessary. This scheme is available nationwide in all Boots pharmacies and almost 300 independent pharmacies.
Throughout the pandemic, the East Surrey Domestic Abuse Service (ESDAS) and the Reigate and Banstead Women’s Aid (RBWA) have continued their crucial work of local outreach and support, despite facing new challenges. On behalf of all residents of Easy Surrey, I would like to pay tribute to Michelle, Charlotte and their staff for all that they do. If you would like to support their work, you can donate to ESDAS here, and RBWA here.
