Improving our roads is one of my local priorities, so thank you so much to the almost 100 local residents from Smallfield, Burstow, Horne and Outwood who joined my HGVs public meeting last Friday on Zoom.
I was joined on the call by local Parish Councils, Surrey County Council representative for Highways Matt Furniss, and welcomed contributions from Tandridge District Councillors Lesley Steeds and Harry Fitzgerald as well as local business operators.
We discussed the results of the HGVs survey I commissioned and heard from residents about what they’d like to see – from addressing the issues around the polo pitch site to increasing enforcement on speed limits and road restrictions.
Looking ahead, we agreed that residents and Parish Councils will work together to agree on a set of solutions that provides a better balance between businesses and residents and that protects our roads. And local leaders from all councils agreed to play their part in supporting residents.
At a national level, I will be pressing the Government to devolve more traffic enforcement powers to local authorities, as well as stressing the need for Traffic Commissioner reform to make sure our regulator has the teeth it needs to operate.
Thank you again to everyone who took part. I will continue to post updates here as we progress with the campaign. And as ever, if you need my assistance or have any questions, please contact me at [email protected].
