As someone who used to work on adult learning programmes, I have been particularly delighted by the Prime Minister’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee, which offers adults without an A-Level or equivalent qualification the opportunity to study a free, fully-funded college course at a time and location that suits them.
Almost 400 qualifications are now available to the estimated 11 million adults who are eligible, ranging from engineering to social care. This will help people to expand their skillset and give employers access to the skilled workforce they need. Some of these qualifications have been shown to add up to £3,000 to an individual's annual earning potential.
In addition to this, I am delighted to have collaborated with local leaders and the Department for Work and Pensions on securing a Youth Hub for East Surrey, which was launched on 1 March. This means there is now a team of dedicated specialists to help our young people access training and skills opportunities and find jobs.
The Youth Hub has already supported more than 20 young people across the constituency, many of whom are well on their way to taking their first steps towards a more positive future in the world of work.
Moving forward, the Hub will have a physical presence in the Harlequin Theatre, the Workary and East Surrey College. The physical launch is being planned for mid-June, when lockdown restrictions could be lifted. You can get in touch with the team and find out more by emailing [email protected].
