In the 1980s, Peter Chan left his civil service job writing speeches at the Department of Energy to pursue his real passion of growing and selling bonsai trees, some of which are hundreds of years old.
Over forty years Peter has developed Herons Bonsai into an oasis on the outskirts of Newchapel, Lingfield - now complete with a fantastic community room for hire, which looks out onto their perfectly pruned Japanese garden.
Peter has also become somewhat of an internet sensation over the last few years, where he has been sharing his expertise with a global audience of millions on YouTube - and he even gave a bonsai masterclass to His Majesty The King when he was Prince of Wales.
I couldn't resist walking away with a tree of my own - whether I can keep it healthy for long is a different matter...
